Inverness and Perth Junction Railway
From Railways
The Inverness and Perth Junction Railway was authorised on 22nd July 1861 and opened in stages between June 1863 and September of that year.
The company's line from Dunkeld through Pitlochry and Aviemore to Forres included the Druimuachdar Summit, at the time the highest point (1484 feet, 452 metres, above Sea Level) on a Standard gauge railway in the UK. Wanlockhead on the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Light Railway held the honour betwen 1898 and its closure, but Druimuachdar has always been unchallenged as far as main line routes are concerned. Curiously, the terrain in the area is such that it does not feel such a significant point.
On 28th February 1864 it absorbed the Perth and Dunkeld Railway.
On 1st February 1865 it merged with the Inveness and Aberdeen Junction Railway to form the Highland Railway.
